How to foster innovation in SMEs: evidence of the effectiveness of a project-based technology transfer approach

Abstract One of the main challenges in technology transfer is to actively involve small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)—which are most need benefit from collaborative Research Development (R&D) programs. This study presents a large-scale collaboration program which focuses on project-based SMEs with little no prior experience research projects. The core this temporary secondment scientists Technology Organization (RTO) into an SME jointly work practical project objective—which directly tailored demands SME. To evaluate effectiveness approach overcoming barriers related finding right partner, limited resources, absorptive capabilities, we adopt R&D Lifecycle Model as theoretical framework. Our findings, using self-reported objective data 106 different projects structural equation model, highlight that considered cluster environment not only successfully mastered challenging topic context industry 4.0 immediately benefits organization, but also engaged new strengthen their scientific technical human capital long term.
